‘Circular City’ was a 2012/13 RSA brief which aimed to find ways of recycling and repurposing discarded materials, thus reducing waste. This project was particularly exciting to me as it allowed me to combine my creative skills with my interest in environmental issues.

Inspired by the idea of pop-up-shops, as often seen at festivals and markets, I chose to design an element of a built environment which could be quickly and easily assembled, adapted and reconfigured in order to accommodate a range of different activities. As well as recycled materials, ‘smart textiles’ such as flexible, woven solar panels, played a key roll in my designs. To communicate an eco-friendly message, I used plants and trees as my main source of visual inspiration.

I was delighted to be one of a small number of students selected from my class to be entered in the RSA competition.
